Conrad Quote about his sculpture work

Down at the Cross Roads, Blue Mountains
DOWN AT THE CROSSROADS
Lacquered hardwoods, plywood, ebony, etc
2006 - 2007  2m x 2m

This sculpture is an "homage" to all the great Blues artists of the 20th century
who have given us such a profound and beautiful music . . .
coming from the joy and suffering of the African-American experience
and from often mysterious and tragic lives.
This sculpture is "a great cry"!

The construction is based on the layering  technique
that I've developed over many years and in many of my works,
and which gives an architectural and design dynamic to the scuplture

"I hope to get a commission to
fabricate this sculpture in steel &
would love to see it installed in a
dramatic location
- Chicago, London,
Mississippi -
this is my dream"

Terror and Martyrdom

TERROR AND MARTYRDOM in the 21st CENTURY

Details  I started working on this sculpture just after the London bombings. I had the strongest feelings of horror at the return of the Middle Ages, and of Good vs Evil.

The upright figure of Fury and Anger - (against the west??) - also a presence and a kind of
altar . . .

A mouth is stuffed with a stone . . . while rushing forward a flaming dog is unleashed

The whole is grotesque, stately and almost comic, like the Spanish Romanesque frescoes in which Saints are sawn in half while strange animals cavort in the background . . .

In this work behind the upright figure a double-handed pit saw is roped to the dead
tree, on which is written TALIBAN in Arabic
I have tried to develop a visual, sculptural language both rich and precise to convey the human drama of this particular point in time.
